5 Things You Can Do To Improve Your Website’s Google Ranking

As a web agency, we always set up client websites with some basic SEO so they are tracked by Google and are listed in the search rankings. We perform on-site optimisation, including adding keywords and descriptions to pages; link the website to a Google Analytics account; and submit the sitemap for indexing through Google Webmaster Tools.

Some of this takes time to take effect, but client websites will start moving up the rankings by completing these basics. We are often asked what else clients can do to rank higher, so here are 5 things you can do to improve your website’s Google ranking:

1. Update your blog

Google loves new content as it means the business is active and is regularly updating their website. The most effective and consistent way of doing this is to write and publish regular blog posts. You can discuss what’s going on in your industry or provide some handy hints and tips (see this blog post ☺), showing off your expertise. Google crawls new content and indexes it so it can be searched.

2. Social media

Of course, when you have great content on your blog and website, you should start sharing it! Sharing your blog posts on social media will get more people to your website, and in turn will increase your click rate and visitor numbers. Doing this consistently with good, relevant content will help you build up a following, and make you the go-to website for the information your visitors want to know more about.

3. Internal content links

With all that great content on your website, it’s good practice to maintain links internally on your website from page to post and vice versa. So for example, if you mention, ‘graphic design’ in a blog post, be sure to link it to your service page on the website. This informs Google of the connections between pages and content, and ultimately helps to improve your ranking power as you’re helping create a crawlable link structure.

4. Google business page

If you haven’t already done so, register your Google My Business Profile page now. It will give your website higher visibility in search results, and therefore more visitors. If you have a few testimonials on your website already, ask your customers to do the same on Google Business page too. This is more important now than ever, with mobiles, tablets and wearables - visitors are ready to buy, so ensure you have all the correct information included, along with any photos, directions and an easy call to action.

5. Google Adwords

This is the only paid option from this list, but the benefits of Google Adwords can pay for itself very quickly. Because you are paying for an advert, your website will appear higher in the rankings. You can instantly appear on page one by using a combination of keywords, placements, Ad Rank and bids. But you will also attract the visitors looking for what you're offering, rather than those who accidentally come across your website. It’s also a great way to track leads and grow your database of contacts too.
